Value assumptions are often used to spark strong emotion in issues that are controversial such as the death penalty, gay marriage, single party payer healthcare. It’s important to also consider the opposite side of the argument and your own assumptions when issues that have such intense feeling and emotion tied to them are at stake.

Descriptive assumptions are based on how a particular event, thing, or era is, was, or will be. The future will be ruined for our children if we don’t trim the national debt. The assumption is that the national debt is large and will continue to grow. The next assumption is that debt will be passed on to our offspring to pay down this debt through taxation or other matters and the financial burden of that will be crippling for them. But what if the American people pay the debt before any children reach the age of majority? What if you have no children? What if there is no America, at least by our currently identifiable way of thinking, in 25 years?
